Breathless

You step out into clear crisp autumn air, and are suddenly struck, with a sharpness that pierces your heart, that somewhere along the way you’ve lost something — something you wanted, something you hoped for — for real and forever and there is nothing you can do to go back and change it. Even if you could, you realize as you struggle to catch your breath, you wouldn’t know how; you wouldn’t be able to do things differently.  Even if you could go back and try, even if you knew what the “right” thing would have been, you realize that you would not be able to change it because you would still be you and you don’t know how to be anyone else.
